Question: If I haven’t 80 days + ticket around the world, where can I (locally) find a global souvenir?

Hypothesis:  On the ever-growing hub of York Boulevard in Highland Park lies Platform, the hybrid shop-gallery-studio of Alex Cole and Sarah Brady. As wayfarers and collectors, these two have thoughtfully curated a space filled with goods from their journeys both around Los Angeles and to the far reaches abroad. But will even the less-adventurous be in luck to make a purchase?

Findings: Certainly. While “global goods” can conjure up exotic ideas (or visions of that big box store that hawks “worldly” wares), Cole and Brady have carefully chosen, pared down, and warmly displayed finds that would fit in any abode. Handcrafted baskets from Africa, Moroccan glasses, and carved Jaipur floor mirrors sit amongst Midcentury furniture  and restored vintage lamps in an eclectic mosaic, while organic candles and striking woven textiles soften the space. And should you need additional inspiration to pick a piece, this pair also stages homes on the market, turning empty listings into showrooms of sorts. Redefining the word platform? We’d say.

Question: Where can I find a perfectly edited store for a gift?

Hypothesis: Once a wood and concrete jungle of lofts and good restaurants, the Arts District has seen a swell of shops pepper the neighborhood in recent months. Sitting smack in the middle is Poketo, the new brick-and-mortar headquarters of the long-loved online company. Started by spouses Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung to give people “art for your everyday”, indeed this is a one-stop wonder for gifts, books, and curiosities that are sourced from all over the world and from their long roster of creatives (which you can read about here). Is it worth popping in to both treat someone (and yourself)?

Findings: Well, do you like well-crafted stuff  to brighten your home and wardrobe? Then, yes. From Avarca Pons walking shoes from Menorca, to Japanese hand-dipped ceramics, Hexagon watches from &design, to Poketo’s own bike baskets and backpacks, there is no shortage of uncommon finds for all people in this airy space. In fact, we suggest just taking the giftee with you to this charming e-tailer as half the fun is in exploring the goods and seeing the online shop live and in color. (Does it sound like we lined up for their arrival? Welcome to the neighborhood, Poketo.)

shop no. 1 // individual medley

Question: Where can we find curated goods for both young and old(er)?

Hypothesis: Meet Individual Medley, the California-cool, new-kid-on-the-block shop in the heart of Atwater Village. With a vibe that invokes a little Yosemite (think Juniper Ridge’s Douglas Fir incense in the air), a little Mojave (desert air plants and natural canvas accents), this is a smart spot that carries perfect picks in the form of Men’s and Women’s clothing, vintage treasures and even charming, hand-embroidered baby goods. Worth scouting for a good gift?

Findings: Yes. Owners Monica and Justin Boyes are not only two of Los Angeles’ friendliest and most humble residents, they also happen to have impeccable taste. Why wander the rest of the city when you can stop here to browse for a little Bridge & Burn, Current/Elliott, or Herschel Supply Company (among others), all while you sip a bubbly pop from their retro cooler? Don’t forget to say hello to Vita, resident super pup and the third member of the Boyes’ bunch.
